Trail Riding Jonkershoek - Part 1

Just a few kilometers outside picturesque Stellenbosch lies the Jonkershoek nature reserve. The complete playground for all forms of mountain biking and hiking, accessible all year long. Playing host to various downhill and cross country races, the area also has a large network of all-mountain trails for those who like to pedal uphill as well as the thrill of a fast open downhill.

Jonkershoek offers a trail for all levels of riding, and for a couple of bucks, you get access for the whole day (year passes also available). Winter months usually brings a fair bit of rain, turning some trails a bit muddy and the tree roots a bit slippery, making riding slightly more interesting. It's also a good time for fixing and building new trails - thanks to Bennet Nel for the great effort he puts in. During summer, the mercury pushes up into the mid 30's celsius, but luckily the nearest section of pine forest is never far away.

Part 1 features an unnamed trail close to the entrance of the reserve.

Being a nature reserve is there any potential of seeing wildlife? I know this isn't a safari but perhaps there might be something "South African"?

It's part of the forestry department, the only wild life will be a few baboons and birds maybe some small deer!

Is it possible to rent a bike around that area? I'm going to capetown and will be around that place soon.

It is possible but not very good bikes, it's more for the occasional ride. Your best bet would be to google for a place that rents out proper bikes, I know of such a company renting out giant trances. Hope that helps!

I go to Capetown about once a month and can tell you that you're just as likely to step in unicorn poo as you are to rent a good DH bike down there. The best bike I've been able to get my hands on was a Giant trance which I rented from irideafrica.com

If you have to rent a bike, I highly recommend using them. I just bring my own bike now.

Buter

Unfortunately Buter is right. Hopefully this will change as the sport grows, but until then you're best of bringing your own bike. Actually, it's a definite business opportunity for someone with a bit of capital Smile

lol yeah thats why i said the trail in this part is unnamed cause when i did the research, there was about 10 different names (for each part) - plus the trail builder also said it hasn't gotten a name yet.
  • 2 0
 Great...so we call it nameless!
  • 1 0
yeah the trails really need to get official names.. are you referring to bennert or koos as the trail builders?
